Negation

Dutch has two main negators: geen (before indefinite nouns) and niet (for everything else). A handful of standalone negative words — niemand, niets, nooit, nergens — add extra precision.

Ik heb geen auto. — I have no car. (geen before indefinite noun)
Ik ga niet naar school. — I'm not going to school. (niet negates verb/prep)
Niemand weet het. — Nobody knows it. (standalone negator)

The core rule: geen replaces an article before a noun — niet negates everything else.

1. Geen vs Niet — overview

Geen — before indefinite nouns

een auto → geen auto

een kopje koffie → geen kopje koffie

vrienden (bare plural) → geen vrienden

tijd (uncountable) → geen tijd

geld (uncountable) → geen geld

Niet — everything else

Verbs: Ik ga niet. Ik werk niet.

Adjectives: Het is niet groot.

Adverbs: Ik spreek niet goed.

Definite nouns: Ik heb de auto niet.

Possessives: Dat is niet mijn boek.

2. Geen — before indefinite nouns

Geen is used when the noun has een, no article, or is a plural without article. It replaces the article.

Compare: Ze drinkt geen koffie (general habit — geen) vs Ze drinkt de koffie niet (not drinking the specific coffee — definite, so niet).

3. Niet — position in the sentence

Niet comes before the word or phrase it negates: adjective, adverb, prepositional phrase, infinitive. At the end of a sentence it negates the whole predicate.

Het is niet groot.

Ik spreek niet goed Nederlands.
niet before the adverb

Negates preposition
Ik ga niet naar school.
niet before the prep phrase

Negates possessive
Dat is niet mijn boek.
niet before mijn/jouw/zijn…

Negates definite noun
Ik heb de sleutels niet gevonden.
niet after the definite object

Negates infinitive
Ik kan niet komen.
niet before the final infinitive

Negates whole predicate
Ik begrijp het niet.
niet at end — whole verb negated

4. Compound negators

These combine niet with another word to add precision about time or degree.

niet meer	no longer / not anymore	Hij woont niet meer in Amsterdam.
nog niet	not yet	Ze is nog niet klaar.
helemaal niet	not at all	Hij is helemaal niet ziek.
bijna niet	barely / hardly	Ik kan bijna niet ademen.
zeker niet	certainly not	Dat doe ik zeker niet.

5. Standalone negators

These words already contain negation — never add niet alongside them.

niets	nothing	Er is niets mis.
nooit	never	Ik ga nooit naar dat restaurant.
nergens	nowhere	Ik kan het nergens vinden.
nee	no	Nee, dat wil ik niet.
noch...noch	neither...nor	Noch hij noch zij weet het.

✗ Niemand weet het niet. — double negation (incorrect in Dutch)
✓ Niemand weet het. — single negation is all you need
