Separable Verbs

Separable verbs (scheidbare werkwoorden) split in two when used in a main clause: the conjugated part stays in position 2, the prefix moves to the very end.

Opstaan → to get up

Ik sta elke ochtend vroeg op. → I get up early every morning.
The verb sta stays in position 2. The prefix op moves to the very end of the clause.

1. Main clause — prefix to the end

In a main clause the conjugated verb occupies position 2 (the V2 rule). The separable prefix goes to the very last position.

meenemen	Ze neemt haar paraplu mee.	She takes her umbrella along.
uittrekken	Hij trekt zijn jas uit.	He takes off his jacket.
binnenkomen	Ze komt de kamer binnen.	She enters the room.
weggaan	Hij gaat vroeg weg.	He leaves early.
opruimen	We ruimen de kamer op.	We tidy up the room.
afzeggen	Ik zeg het feest af.	I cancel the party.

Never write ik opsta — the prefix always detaches in a main clause. The prefix goes to the very last position, after all other elements: Ik sta elke ochtend om zeven uur op.

2. Inversion and questions

When the verb comes first (questions, or a sentence that starts with an adverb), the prefix still goes to the end. Also remember: when jij/je directly follows the verb, the -t drops.

Sta jij elke ochtend vroeg op?
Do you get up early every morning? — question — -t drops after jij

Zet hij de televisie aan?
Does he switch on the television? — question — no -t drop (hij)

Morgen gaan we weg.
Tomorrow we are leaving. — adverb first — verb still in position 2, prefix at end

Neemt zij haar paraplu mee?
Does she take her umbrella along? — question — no -t drop (zij)

3. Subordinate clause — verb stays together

After conjunctions like dat, omdat, als, toen, terwijl, nadat, the separable verb stays together and moves to the end of the clause.

Main clause	Subordinate clause
Ik weet ...	dat hij vroeg opstaat.
Ze kan niet komen ...	omdat ze thuis blijft.
Hij zegt ...	dat hij de vaat afwast.
We gaan pas weg ...	als iedereen klaar is.

Quick check: in a main clause → split the verb. In a subordinate clause → keep it together at the end.

4. Perfect tense — prefix + ge- + stem

In the past participle of a separable verb, ge- goes between the prefix and the verb stem. The participle always stays together at the end of the clause.

weggaan	weggegaan	Ze zijn vroeg weggegaan.

5. Infinitive with te

When a separable verb is used with te (after proberen, beloven, vergeten…), te goes between the prefix and the verb.

Ik probeer vroeger op te staan.
I'm trying to get up earlier. — op + te + staan

Hij belooft de vaat af te wassen.
He promises to wash the dishes. — af + te + wassen

Ze vergat haar sleutels mee te nemen.
She forgot to take her keys along. — mee + te + nemen

We hopen vroeg weg te gaan.
We hope to leave early. — weg + te + gaan

Never write te opstaan — always op te staan.
